KIBERA SLUM PROJECT

Hope Grows in messy Places
IMG-20210713-WA0005

Allow me to introduce Pastor Chris and Joanna Okumu. They live and serve in Kibera Slum Nairobi, the biggest slum in Africa. More than 30 years ago, they bought land, the authorities used to bury dead babies. Foundational to all they have built and are building is a complete reliance on God to make ways of provision through the hardest of obstacles and adversity.

Today on that land stands the school, a health centre a boarding house, and a small water production project that is key in providing employment for staff and education for the children as they continue to look for sustainable means. They also have cattle providing milk, chickens and fish too. It's a miracle that surrounded by an urban slum they have found clean accessible drinking water for production . Only God!

They established the Soweto Academy giving children in the slum opportunity to be educated because they believe Education empowers children and gives them Hope for a different future. Today children come from new born to the creche so mothers can work, educating through to teenage girls.

The transformational stories that have been written from out of this place speak for themselves. Now Adults who were once educated at Soweto are becoming Teachers, Doctors and some choose to come back and serve in this role at Soweto because they now want to pay it forward. Students frequently gain scholarships in hockey and volley ball for their achievements playing in National and International teams.

Interdenominational, multidisciplinary teams from Hinckley area have the privilege to partner with them and become a part of empowering the church, changing the lives of children and sharing the gospel with the people of Kibera Slum through prayer, teaching, ministry and practical serving.

Previous teams have focused on education, teaching children through a gospel worldview, held a teaching and healing retreat for teenage girls who suffer the effects of heinous trauma, and facilitated a conference to serve and bless the church in Kibera, including many who lead and serve in the 17 churches across Kenya that Bishop Chris has established.

Our Service

The main service begins at 10.45am with a warm welcome from one of our Members. We have a time of sung worship, usually led by our Band.  On the first Sunday of the month we share Communion together during our service. We have spoken prayers, and a reading from the bible. Sometimes people share things that have happened to them (often called a testimony or a blessing) and sometimes it could be something that they believe God is saying to the whole church family. This might seem strange the first time you hear it but it’s all part of our connecting with God. One of our Leaders or a visiting Preacher/Minister will give a sermon/talk that is bible based, explaining how we can apply that message and teaching to our everyday lives. We usually finish with a worship song and a prayer. There is an opportunity to receive personal prayer at the end of the service, in a quiet place. Just ask one of the Welcome Team to guide you to the right person and place...........

What about my children?

S.A.L.T  - Sharing And Learning Together.
School age children go out into our children’s groups which we currently run on the 1st  Sunday of each month (from Sept-June):-
Children stay with their parent or grown-up at the start of the service. We really value worshipping God all together as a family for the first part of our service. When it’s time for the children to go out to their various groups, Leaders take them up to our Pathways centre for their activities and teaching.  Activities and teaching varies depending on their age. There is a friendly welcome, bible stories, sharing time, praying, music, craft, drama, fun games and free play.  Children come back into the Sanctuary to re-join us for our coffee and chat time.

On the 2nd Sunday of the month we have our Parade Service where Girls Brigade and Boys Brigade children and parents join us for a family friendly fun service. We serve breakfast for our Brigade families and church family in Pathways from 10am prior to the service which starts at 10.45.

On the 3rd Sunday of the month, alongside our normal morning service, we run Messy Church in the Pathways Centre. This is "alternative" church, which we run in the afternoon from 3pm-5pm. This is open to everyone, not just children and parents/carers. See our Messy Church page for what goes on here.

Please contact families@hinckleybaptist.com if you would like more details about our Families groups.

Getting Connected

Life Groups

While Sundays are a great way to meet new people, worship God, listen to good Bible teaching and catch up over coffee/tea, it is in smaller groups that you can really get to know someone. Being part of one of our Life Groups allows you to make new friends, share together and support each other. We have a variety of groups that meet throughout the week. Check out Life Groups and see if you would like to join a group? We can put you in touch with a Life Group Leader who will be more than happy to invite you along to try their group.

Serving and Volunteering

If you would like to get involved in the life of the church including our community based groups based from Pathways, as a volunteer,  please speak to one of our Welcome Team or contact admin@hinckleybaptist.com or call us on 01455 890026 and someone will get back to you to chat about opportunities and current vacancies.
